Our balcony in summer / Unser Sommer - Balkon

A lot of my DIY projects start with: we ‘inherited’ this furniture from the previous tenants and try to make it work for us - and this patio set, which we put on the balcony is no exception.

I wouldn’t have chosen the rather uncomfortable, plastic rattan bench and seat with a glass topped coffee table - but hey, it was for free ^^

The glass of the coffee table had to go immediately, there is no way and even with two times cleaning per day to ever keep it clean and I anyways needed the table as a stool.

Viele meiner DIY Projekte beginnen mit: Das haben wir von den Vormietern übernommen und jetzt versuchen wir etwas daraus zu machen, was uns gefällt - und so verhält es sich auch mit diesen Gartenmöbeln, die wir auf den Balkon gestellt haben. Ich hätte die erstaunlich unbequemen, Plastik-Rattan Bank, Stuhl und Tisch mit Glasplatte sicher nicht gewählt, aber dann mussten wir eben auch kein Geld dafür ausgeben ^^

Das Glas auf dem Tisch habe ich gleich am zweiten Tag entfernt, denn selbst mit ständig nachwischen, war es unmöglich diese Glasplatte sauber zu halten - und ich wollte statt Tisch ohnehin lieber einen Hocker haben. 

Then, we ordered a two meter long and 5 cm high foam mattress from a nearby factory, to cut out new seat cushions. After that I had to find a colorful outdoor fabric.

The choices in Germany are very limited, usually you will find maybe three outdoor fabrics and you still have to order them online. Therefore, I initially went with a simple decorative fabric that I liked, but already while sewing I realized that it won’t last for long and the sun and cats added to its fast decline.

Dann bestellten wir eine Schaumstoffmatratze 2 Meter Länge, mit 5 cm Höhe von einer nahegelegenen Matratzenfabrik um daraus neue Auflagen zuzuschneiden.

Als nächstes musste ich einen bunten, wettertauglichen Stoff finden.

Die Auswahl ist da in Deutschland unglaublich mager, man findet vielleicht drei Varianten und die muss man trotzdem erst online bestellen. Deswegen kaufte ich zuerst einen schönen Dekostoff, der nicht für draußen gedacht war. Leider bemerkte ich schon beim Nähen, daß das wohl nichts wird und die Sonne & Katzen gaben ihm ziemlich schnell den Rest.

My second try was a real outdoor cloth in a simple blue color, which I found a bit boring, but started to love a lot. I sewed up all cushions for the seat, the bench and the stool, and added more blue accents to the balcony, like flower pots, solar lights and a found bar stool that I turned into a flower shelf.

Mein zweiter Versuch war dann ein echter Outdoor-Stoff, unifarben in blau. Das fand ich eigentlich erst langweilig, aber mittlerweile mag ich es sehr. Ich nähte daraufhin alle Auflagen für den Stuhl, Bank und Hocker und fand außerdem weitere blaue Akzente, wie Blumentöpfe, Solarlichter - sowie einen Barhocker vom Sperrmüll, den ich in ein Blumenregal umwandelte.

I made a wooden board to fit the stool and use it again as a table, if needed.

Um den Hocker manchmal doch als Tisch zu nutzen, gestaltete ich eine Art Brett-Tablett mit zwei Griffen, das man bei Bedarf auflegen kann. 

The bamboo ‘area rug’ is made up of four bath mats, made more durable with outdoor wood stain that I sewed together … and there you go, our balcony is done for the season and our favorite hangout spot on warm summer evenings :)

Der Bambus-‘Teppich’ besteht aus vier Badematten, die ich zusammengenäht, und mit Holzbeize noch

haltbarer gemacht habe … damit ist unser Balkon nun bereit für die Saison - und unser Lieblingsplatz an warmen Sommerabenden :)

A pillow for the cat / Ein Kissen für die Katze

Recently, my cat Shweta was once again ill with a bladder infection, and while she was recovering from pain meds and antibiotics, I thought I should finally sew up that pillow cover for her that I wanted to make in a while.

She has one specific pillow on the couch and since she keeps on hanging with her claws in the fabric, it was already quite broken and urgently needed a replacement.

Vor kurzem war meine Katze Shweta einmal mehr erkrankt und während sie sich von Schmerzmitteln und Antibiotika erholte, wollte ich ihr einen neuen Kissenbezug nähen. Das hatte ich schon eine ganze Weile vor, denn sie hat ein Lieblingskissen, das unbedingt einen neuen Bezug brauchte. Sie hängt beim Schlafen immer mit ihren Krallen darin fest, deswegen entstehen viele Löcher.

I got a sturdy cotton fabric, which will hopefully last for a while and planned on a simple envelope style pillow. But, I also wanted to add piping, which I was nervous about, because I never did it before.

Thankfully it wasn’t as complicated as I thought, I managed to sew both fabrics and the piping together and complete the pillow.

I’m quite happy with the result and might see a lot more pillows with piping in my future :)

Ich nahm einen stabilen Baumwollstoff, der hoffentlich eine Weile halten wird und wollte einen einfachen Kissenbezug mit überlappenden Hotelverschluß nähen. Aber ich wollte auch eine Paspel in den Rand einnähen und das machte mich etwas nervös, denn das war meine erste Paspel.

Zum Glück war es aber gar nicht so kompliziert und ich konnte die beiden Stoffhälften plus Paspel zur gewünschten Kissenhülle zusammennähen.

Ich bin recht zufrieden mit dem Resultat und sehe noch viele neue Kissenhüllen mit Paspel in meiner Zukunft :) 

Blue pillow / Blaues Kissen

Making pillow covers from tote bags is an ongoing project of mine. I love to find unique or souvenir tote bags on travels and sew them into pillows. But since the fabric is usually a rather thin cotton I started to add a second layer. One could of course buy fusible webbing (and I did this in the past), but this time I rather bought a cosy fleece blanket from the dollar store.
The blanket will also provide enough fabric for a couple of more tote bag pillows in the future :) 

This tote bag is originally from Poland. I bought it in the Intermarché supermarket in Świnoujście, because I was drawn to the botanical print :)

Seit Jahren nähe ich gerne Kissenhüllen aus Baumwollbeuteln und noch ist kein Ende in Sicht. Ich suche überall nach ungewöhnlichen Beuteln, oder kaufe sie auf Reisen als Souvenirs. Doch da das Material nur aus dünner Baumwolle besteht, muss man für ein schönes Kissen eine zweite Lage Stoff einnähen. Dafür kann man Bügelvlies verwenden (und das habe ich so auch bei früheren Kissen gemacht) oder man kauft eine Fleecedecke im Euro Shop und hat damit genug Stoff für einige zukünftige Kissen vorrätig. 

Dieser Baumwollbeutel stammt aus Polen. Ich habe ihn im Intermarché Supermarkt in Swinemünde gekauft, weil ich den botanischen Aufdruck so schön fand :) 

Scarf Pillows / Schalkissen

When I saw this scarf at Primark, I knew that I had to have it - to sew two pillow covers from the fabric. 

Since relocating from Vermont to Germany, I still don’t own a new sewing machine - so I had to sew it by hand, but this wasn’t a hard job to do ...  Soon enough I had two beautiful new pillows to decorate for fall :)

Als ich diesen Schal bei Primark sah, ‘musste’ ich ihn kaufen, denn ich wollte den Stoff nutzen um daraus Kissenhüllen zu nähen. 

Da ich - seit meinem Umzug vom letzten Jahr - noch keine neue Nähmaschine gekauft habe, nähte ich beide Hüllen mit der Hand, doch das ging schnell vonstatten. Und schon hatte ich zwei neue Kissen als kuschlige Herbstdeko :) 

Seven Sunday-Things / Sieben-Sachen Sonntag

Following the idea of “Frau Liebe” (and collected at the “Grinsestern” - Blog) I want to show on every Sunday (or sometimes on a Monday Tuesday), seven things which I used - with my hands - during the day.

Nach der Idee von "Frau Liebe", (und der Sammlung bei „Grinsestern“) gibt es an dieser Stelle jeden Sonntag (oder erst am Montag Dienstag) Bilder von sieben Sachen, für die ich heute meine Hände gebraucht habe.

1. (Still) Wearing my Movember earrings; and lots of layers (two pair of socks, two leggings, underskirt, long-arm dress, top, warm scarf... the secret to wear a dress in winter :) 

Noch kann ich meine Movember Ohrringe tragen :) und das eiskalte Wetter verlangt außerdem nach Lagenlook extrem: zwei Paar Socken, zwei Leggings, Unterrock, langärmliges Kleid, Top und warmer Schal ... dann fällt mir gar nicht mehr auf, daß ich keine einzige Jeans besitze ^^

2. I had to shovel some smallish amount of snow. 

Ich musste zum ersten Mal in diesem jungen Winter ein wenig Schnee wegschieben… mehr zur Katzenunterhaltung als echter Not. 

3. We had brunch at ‘Panera Bread’. 

Wir hatten Brunch bei ‚Panera Bread‘.

4. I made another bag pillow as a gift for a friend's birthday, since she loves black, red and books (I washed the bag of course). 

Ich nähte einmal mehr ein Kissen aus einem Einkaufsbeutel ... dieses Mal zum Geburtstag für eine Freundin. 

5. Since none of the pillows would fit into the bag cover, I also sewed and stuffed a pillow inlet. 

Und da kein Kissen in die Tasche passen wollte, nähte ich ein kleines Kissen aus einem alten Stück Duschvorhang und stopfte es aus.

6. All energy got drained from me while walking in the icy winds- this Dunkaccino was very much needed. 

Nach einem Spaziergang in eisigen Winden, brauchte ich dringend einen Dunkaccino um mich wieder aufzuwärmen.

And 7. for dinner I made another chicken pot pie, which we paired with our (my) favorite beer ... perfect combination to end the day :) 

Zum Abendessen gab es ein Wunschgericht des Mannes: Hühnchenpastete (sagt Wikipedia, obwohl ich mir unter Pastete etwas anderes vorgestellt habe), die sehr gut zu meinem Lieblingsbier passte :)

The outdoors are beautiful as ever, but I’m not yet used to the frigid temperatures of the new season… hence we only walk around for small amounts at a time. I wish you nevertheless a wonderful winter week :)

Draußen ist es in jeder Jahreszeit schön, doch derzeit habe ich noch Probleme mich an die eisigen Temperaturen wieder zu gewöhnen. Daher gönne ich mir Frischluft derzeit nur in kleinen Dosen... Ich wünsche Dir dennoch eine wundervolle, winterliche Woche :)

Bag pillow / Beutel Kissen

Last year, when I was in Germany, I visited the ‘Marzipan House’ in Lübeck, since I’m a big chocolate-marzipan lover.
My uncle gifted me a small selection from their huge store and I also got a simple tote bag with the brand print.

Since I hardly ever use tote bags for shopping - I have foldable nylon bags with me all the time - the bag just sat on a fabric pile and I was wondering what to do with it: A pillow cover seemed to be the obvious choice and this week I finally sewed it together.

 .

The cloth was a little bit too less to make a nice fitting envelope pillow, but it worked just fine and now I have a slightly seasonal pillow to show off :) 

I think that this is a great idea for all kind of souvenir bags and I’m already dreaming of an ‘I ♥ NY’ pillow…
 .

Als ich im letzten Jahr auf Heimreise in Deutschland war, besuchte ich auch das Niederegger Marzipan Haus in Lübeck. 
Mein Onkel schenkte mir eine kleine Marzipanauswahl aus dem riesigen Marzipangeschäft und ich bekam einen Einkaufsbeutel mit Niederegger-Aufdruck dazu. 

 .

Da ich so gut wie nie echte Einkaufsbeutel benutze (ich habe zusammenfaltbare Nylonbeutel in allen Handtaschen), lag mein Marzipanbeutel leider nur herum, bis ich auf die ziemlich naheliegende Idee kam, eine Kissenhülle daraus zu nähen. Der Beutel war ein wenig klein, so daß ich keinen großzügigen Hotelverschluß nähen konnte, doch es ging gerade noch. 

Jetzt habe ich ein jahreszeitlich passendes Kissen, das durchaus auch als dezente Weihnachtsdekoration herhalten könnte. 
Ich finde die Idee Souvenirbeutel zu verwenden jedenfalls ziemlich toll und träume schon von einem ‚I ♥ NY‘ Kissen :)
