Great Glebe Garage Sale, Ottawa

It is already one year ago, that I was walking with my friends through the Glebe, looking for the perfect find at the annual Great Glebe Garage Sale (GGGS). When you want to see how a complete town quarter looks like, when every neighbour is having a front yard sale on the same day at the same time, ideally with perfect bright, sunny weather and many fresh lemon stalls around, just come to Ottawa, Ontario.

On 28th of May 2011, from 9am till 3pm, you can flock with the masses through the small streets of this charming, old neighbourhood. The best finds will be usually found before opening time and after 3pm you may find many free items as well. Don’t take your car, because you won’t find any parking space nearby and after all this walking, take your bike, drive to 198 Main Street and have some nice, yummy food at the Green Door Restaurant :)

This week I love ....

... these furniture from the Thrift Store in Ottawa. When I saw it for the first time, my first reaction was: I love it… followed by … and I need to have it. It is bright orange and red, just like made for our living room which never saw any storage space and it impersonates the word: Retro. But, we are moving in two weeks and the last thing we need right now is more furniture.
While I was half-hearted thinking if my husband could possibly overlook, that we have one room full of furniture more to pack in a one-bedroom apartment, I had to accept, that right now there was the absolute wrong place and time for them. So I had to let the shining, nice, wonderful pieces just there where I saw them, for someone else to buy.
Already, while being in the shop a couple of other people were interested in these furniture, so I guess by now they are sold for sure, if you still want to have a look, just make a tour to the Salvation Army Thrift Store at St. Laurent/ Belfast Rd., next to the Mid-East Food Center in Ottawa, ON.

Pick of the week / Wochenauswahl

While visiting the International Pavilion at the Ottawa Tulip Festival I came across the stall of Turkey, where I saw an artist painting on water. He gave the word watercolor a brand new meaning. He would paint on the surface of the water, creating a marble effect with different colors and even flowers. Then he would carefully put a piece of paper above, hang it for drying and start a new water work. The technique is called Ebru and the marbled paper was in former times often used to bind books.
It wasn’t possible for me to make a picture of him because a bunch of people were blocking the view, but I bought two of his works, because I really liked them in their fluid simplicity and the 1 $ per original was affordable as well. This is a short video which I found at youtube about this old method: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XwS3Clefz_Y

Red Chair –Roter Stuhl

One day while waiting at the bus stop in a far away part of the town, I happened to see the window of this Red Chair Kids-store and fell in love with the funny owl pillows... I am anyways a big owl fan and the pillows were such a simple and nice autumn decoration, that I had to make these pictures and post them here... Maybe they are a good inspiration for someone out there?

Work in Progress - In Arbeit

I started this picture or illustration as a trial, a test... I brought some cardboard boxes from the supermarket and wanted to use the pieces for fast, rough painting. I wanted to be more spontaneous and less dependent on the original picture or motif... I didn’t want to have any original picture and so I started this project. But one of the backgrounds seemed to call me and what started as some kind of a ‘lake with trees’-picture, developed into the most detailed and colourful street scene I ever made. All houses and even the shops are inspired by houses which I know in my neighbouring streets, but they are never exactly the same houses... more like their fairytale counterpart.
I loved making this picture; it was wonderful to see how it grew with each layer. Of course it isn’t any high art, it is most probably perfect for a kids room, but maybe you can also see the fun I had while creating it.. :-)

Raw Sugar Café

Recently a friend introduced me to the Raw Sugar Café in Ottawas Chinatown and immediately I fell in love with the interior decoration.
No chair seemed to have a matching partner, all colors, styles and materials were happily mismatched. Even every table had a different design. The whole café had so many nice and interesting details, that I just want to show a few: ...

...to pull all these pieces together, the café owners used a very dark wood flooring and one main wall color, with only a few accent colors on smaller part of the walls.
But, in a Café it is of course not just about the design, I can also recommend the nice cakes and tea, as well... (try the Lemon Tarte ... :-)
