Pick of the week / Wochenauswahl

One of the things that I really miss since moving to Germany, are the readily available Thrift Stores everywhere in Canada and the US. It was always such a huge treasure hunt for me, trying to find the most unique or valuable item - and compared to that, Germany is rather a second hand desert. - There are flea markets, but I’m bad in bargaining … other than that you can sometimes buy stinky clothes which were laying too long in those outdoor donation bins that the smell is never leaving again. And there are the tiny Oxfam shops. But even the smallest Salvation Army, or Church Charity Shop in my neighbourhood in Vermont was larger than the biggest Oxfam shop in a city like Frankfurt. 

Eines der Dinge, die ich wirklich vermisse nachdem ich zurück nach Deutschland zog, waren die zahlreichen Thrift Stores / Second Hand Läden in Kanada und den USA. Es war immer wie eine Schatzsuche, das schönste oder gar wertvollste Stück zu finden - und im Vergleich dazu ist Deutschland eine Second Hand Wüste. - Es gibt zwar Flohmärkte, doch ich bin sehr schlecht im Preise aushandeln … und sonst kann man vielleicht noch Kleidung bei Humana kaufen, die jedoch schon so lange in diesen fürchterlichen Kleiderboxen lag, daß man den Geruch nie wieder heraus bekommt. Es gibt natürlich auch die winzigen Oxfam Läden, doch selbst der kleinste Salvation Army oder Kirchladen in meinem Viertel in Vermont, war größer als das größte Oxfam-Geschäft in einer Stadt wie Frankfurt.

So I was very happy, when I accidentally stumbled upon a shop with a unique concept in Langen. 

Similar to a flea market, one could rent a space in the shop and sell whatever you want to in your shelf space; and with certain numbers above the price tags, the money is getting collected into the account of the renter. It was full of people when I visited and they seemed to be so excited to find their own treasures. I even overheard the owner on the phone, telling other prospective sellers that there was currently no free shelf space available.
It seems like the market and interest is there, just somehow no one ever thought of opening a real big Thrift Store in the City.

I didn’t want to pick up anything, since I was there by bike and didn’t really had a bag with me, but I still left with a small bembel (a stoneware jug), a beer mug in owl form, those salad silverware (I looked for similar ones since forever) and a decorative plate. I will certainly return to this shop from time to time … just not that often, so that I don’t pile up stuff on my own ^^ 

Deswegen war ich sehr glücklich, als ich zufällig einen ungewöhnlichen Laden in Langen fand. 

So ähnlich, wie auf einem Flohmarkt, mietet man sich dort einen Platz, nur in diesem Fall ein Regal im Geschäft. Dort stellt man alles auf, was man verkaufen möchte und anhand der Nummern über dem Preisschild wird der Erlös wiederum dem jeweiligen Mieter zugeschrieben. Als ich das Geschäft besuchte, war es voller begeisterter Käufer und ich hörte auch den Besitzer am Telefon, der anderen Leuten, die ebenfalls Regalflächen mieten wollten, absagen musste, weil alles ausgebucht war. 
Es scheint, daß der Markt und das Interesse auf jeden Fall da ist - es hat nur noch nie jemand daran gedacht einen wirklich großen Charity/Second Hand/Thrift Shop zu eröffnen.

Ich wollte eigentlich gar nichts kaufen, weil ich noch weiter musste mit meinem Fahrrad und eine vernünftige Tasche hatte ich auch nicht dabei… aber dann kaufte ich doch einen kleinen Bembel, einen Bierkrug in Eulenform (beide werden Blumenvasen), ein Salatbesteck (nach etwas Ähnlichem hatte ich schon lange gesucht) und einen kleinen Teller. Ich werden sicher von Zeit zu Zeit sehen, wie sich das Angebot verändert… nur werde ich den Laden lieber nicht zu häufig besuchen, sonst muss ich bald selbst ein Regal anmieten ^^
